課程大綱 This is an introductory course aiming to familiarize students with basic concepts of translation, including qualifications of good translators, the procedure of translation, use of references & electronic tools and the idea of translation equivalence. Also, the relevance of contrastive studies between English and Chinese to translation will be introduced. A guided application of the linguistic knowledge to practical work will be provided, in the interest of assisting students in formulating suitable and appropriate translation strategies and techniques. This course is intended to prepare students for more specialized translation training.

課程進度 Week 1: course introduction Week 2: (1) what makes a good translator; (2) translation procedure,and resources Week 3: translation equivalence; Week 4: English and Chinese thinking modes and word order Week 5: contrastive studies of parts of speech (1) Week 6: contrastive studies of parts of speech (2) Week 7: contrastive studies of parts of speech (3) Week 8: contrastive studies of parts of speech (4) Week 9: group translation task Week 10: contrastive studies of sentence structures (1) Week 11: contrastive studies of sentence sructures (2) Week 12 culture and translation Week 13: discourse analysis and translation Week 14: text types and translation Week 15: group oral presentation Week 16: translation of journalistic texts Week 17: translation of scientific and commerical texts Week 18: final exam

評量方式與標準 1. attendance and participation: 20% 2. previewing and reflections: 20% 3. translation assignments: 30% 4. one group translation task: 10% 5. final-exam: 20%
