課程大綱本課程主要把城市的發展置於歷史的脈絡中去研究探討各個歷史階段的城市發展特質其範圍涉及人類社會的各個領域從城市的外在形式一直探討到它的內部因素另外本課程也探討城市文化與市民生活的品質並論述城市的建築與空間構成讓學生瞭解時空轉移中城市發展與需求的差異並讓學生從城市的歷史發展中找到對付當前城市問題的方法最後本課程也會觸及都市重建與現代城市發展的各類議題

課程進度 1週. 都市發展史概述與課程介紹 2週. The Cities in History-- from Lewis Mumford 歷史中的城市 3週. The Architecture of the City: 1) The Collective Memory; 2) The Typology; 3) The Urban Artifacts. 城市建築 4週. The Urban Transformation: 1) The Decline and Renaissance of the City; 2) The Destruction and Reconstruction of the City; 3) Urban Renewal and Related Issues. 都市的轉型 5週. The City and Its Boundary: 1) The Customs Boundary; 2) The Nature of City Wall; 3) River Towns; 4) Suburbia and Edge Cities. 城市和邊界 6週.
