課程大綱	Course Title: Public Speaking and Debates Credit Hours: 2 Instructor’s Name: Dr. Yun-Hua Yang Contact E-Mail: yhyang@ntut.edu.tw Term Offered: Fall, 2025 Course Description This course is designed to advance English-major students' communication competence through public speaking and debating in English. While most students at this level demonstrate fluency in English, many struggle to structure their ideas and thoughts in a logical and persuasive manner. This course teaches students to organize information and materials, analyze critically, and restructure ideas to engage in effective communication that delivers meaningful results. The topics and issues adopted for speeches are thought-provoking and require critical thinking that reflects intellectual value transcending subject matter through multiple perspectives. In addition, it is important to note that the purpose of learning activities designed is to practice constructing a persuasive, evidence-based argument for a proposed solution to an issue of concern. All speeches must be grounded in academic rigor and supported by verifiable data, not personal or political bias, as this is solely for training in critical debate and social awareness. 1. Attendance  Attendance will be recorded by the Teaching Assistant (TA).  Students are required to attend all class sessions.  Each absence results in a 10% deduction from the final semester grade (based on a 100% scale).  Tardiness incurs a 5% deduction.  Exceptions will only be made in cases of extreme circumstances. 2. Speech and Debate Assignments Each student is expected to deliver three individual speeches and participate in one policy debate using a hybrid Cross-Examination (CX) / congressional format. Students will work in groups for debates. Speech Requirements:  All speeches must be 4-6 minutes in duration (ideal range).  Speeches shorter than 3 minutes or longer than 6 minutes will result in zero points.  All speech sessions must be video-recorded.  Make-up speeches are allowed only for official leave permission or extreme circumstances.  It is essential to comply with prescriptive requirements for each speech type. Failure to follow requirements will result in disqualification and receive zero points. 3. Required in-Class Submissions For each speech, students must submit to the instructor: • Speech outline following the specified format (see Appendix 3) • Complete speech script with proper citations and references • Instructor evaluation sheet (see Appendix 1) • Students who do not have these materials ready or fail to comply with outline format requirements forfeit the right to deliver their speech and receive zero points. 4. Digital Submissions of Speech and Debate Materials Student speakers are required to upload the following materials to the designated assignment section on Google Classroom, with each file clearly labeled according to the specified naming convention as instructed. All files must be uploaded by the specified deadline. Failure to follow t or submit incomplete materials will result in point deductions. 5. Video Portfolio Students will use their own recording devices for in-class speeches. A complete portfolio including all recordings is required for submission at semester's end. 6. Delivery Requirements  No scripts or notes are permitted during speech delivery  Outlines may be displayed via poster or screen  Using a full script during delivery will result in zero points Grading Policy Academic Integrity: Academic honesty is prioritized in this class. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Students will fail the course immediately upon identification of any plagiarism in submitted writing or presented speeches. Originality: Students are required to develop their own original, individualized speech topics based on the assigned topic areas. Both sessions will be recorded.  Students work in affirmative and negative teams on four debate topics selected and modified from speech topic areas.  This schedule is tentative and subject to modification.

Important Notes 1. The implementation of the final debate match may be subject to scheduling contingencies. Exact dates, formats, and related matters will be determined later in the semester. 2. Students must submit the speech assessment portfolio at semester's end. Failure to submit the portfolio will override all other grades and result in course failure. 3. Course content and activities may be adjusted for effective teaching and learning. This syllabus is subject to modification as the class proceeds. Updated information will be provided as needed. 4.
