課程大綱	Objective: The purpose of this course is, first, to clarify key concepts in the understanding and interpretation of literary/cultural texts, and secondly, to demonstrate the ways in which important steps and maneuvers should be undertaken in order to compose a piece of promising academic writing. All the research and academic writing in this field follows MLA Style, which then becomes a focus of study and practice in this course.
課程進度 (1-16週)	Research Methodology for the Cultural and Literary Studies With Prof. Ju-ying Vinia Huang E-mail: vinia@mail.ntut.edu.tw I. Objective: The purpose of this course is, first, to clarify key concepts in the understanding and interpretation of literary/cultural texts, and secondly, to demonstrate the ways in which important steps and maneuvers should be undertaken in order to compose a piece of promising academic writing. All the research and academic writing in this field follows MLA Style, which then becomes a focus of study and practice in this course. II. Textbooks: (1) MLA HANDBOOK (9th edition, 2022) for MLA Style in academic writing (2) The Little Seagull Handbook with Exercises (Norton 2021) (3) Digitalized reading materials selected from our reference books III. Syllabus 1.Week One and Week Two: (1) Introduction of MLA style for academic writing; preparation and organization of class activities (2) Reading of pieces of prose to grasp the topic sentence, the main idea, the supporting details, the conclusion, and the right vocabulary. (3) Reading of a series of picture books by Leo Leonni to capture the main idea of each story and formulate its topic sentence 2. Week Three: MLA HANDBOOK, pp. 1-21 Practicum of MLA style: (1) research question (2) main theme (3) outline (4) abstract (5) summary 3. Week Four: MLA HANDBOOK, pp. 22-40 Practicum of MLA style: (1) argument and support (2) chapter arrangement (3) conclusion (4) citation and bibliography The 1st task: the key words related to the structure of stories, including plot development, rising action, conflict, (anti)climax, and the turning point. 4. Week Five: MLA HANDBOOK, pp.41-61 (1) Three-act structure: Setup, conflict, and resolution (2) The hero's journey: Departure, adventure, and return The 2nd task: Forms of narrative 5. Week Six: MLA HANDBOOK, pp.62-81 (1) linear, nonlinear, and interactive 6. Week Seven: MLA HANDBOOK, pp.82-100 (2) foreshadow, flashback, and warped time/space The 3rd task: Modes of narration 7.
