Course Objective	衛星遙測應用與實作的課程主要介紹衛星遙測技術的基本原理、應用場景和實作方法。課程內容通常包括以下幾個方面：衛星遙測基礎知識，衛星遙測數據來源和平臺，衛星遙測數據處理與分析，衛星遙測應用案例，衛星遙測應用實作。本課程一半以上的時間將為實作，學生將熟習在遙測分析軟體上分析真正的衛星資料，並在學期末遞交對自選主題之一研究報告。 The course of "Applications of Satellite Remote Sensing" mainly introduces the basic principles, application scenarios, and practical methods of satellite remote sensing technology. The course content usually includes the following aspects: basic knowledge of satellite remote sensing, satellite remote sensing data sources and platforms, satellite remote sensing data processing and analysis, satellite remote sensing application cases, and satellite remote sensing application practices. More than half of the time in this course will be spent on practical exercises, where students will become proficient in analyzing real satellite data using remote sensing analysis software. At the end of the semester, students will submit a research report on one of their self-selected topics.
Course Schedule	Week 1: Introduction to Satellite Remote Sensing Course introduction, grading criteria, and syllabus overview. Fundamentals of Satellite Orbital Mechanics (LEO, MEO, GEO). Introduction to the Electromagnetic Spectrum.Distinctions between Passive (Radiometer) and Active (Radar) remote sensing systems. Week 2: Microwave Signal Theory (I) - Propagation and Channel Maxwell’s Equations and mechanisms of electromagnetic wave propagation. Calculation of Free Space Path Loss (FSPL).Atmospheric Absorption, Atmospheric Windows, and Polarization effects. Week 3: Microwave Signal Theory (II) - Signals and Waveforms Baseband vs. Passband signals: Principles of complex signals (I/Q Data). Analog and Digital Modulation techniques (AM/FM, ASK/FSK/PSK). Radar Waveform Design: Pulse and Linear Frequency Modulation (LFM/Chirp). Week 4: Transmitter and Receiver Architectures RF Front-end Architectures: Superheterodyne and Zero-IF (Homodyne). Analysis of Key Components: Low Noise Amplifier (LNA), Mixer, and Power Amplifier (PA). Practical calculation of Link Budget. Week 5: Antenna Theory and Remote Sensing Applications Antenna Parameters: Gain, Beamwidth, and Directivity. Fundamentals of Array Antennas. Geometric principles and resolution formulas of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Week 6: Midterm Analysis Report (Case Study) Group Presentations: Reverse engineering and simulation analysis of microwave parameters for active remote sensing satellites (e.g., Sentinel-1, FORMOSAT-5/7). Review, feedback, and discussion. Week 7: Instrumentation Lab (I) - Signal Generator Instrument interface operation and safety regulations. Lab 1: Generating standard Continuous Wave (CW) and Pulse Modulated signals. Lab 2: Simulating satellite channel effects (Multipath Fading and Doppler Shift). Week 8: Instrumentation Lab (II) - Spectrum Analyzer Principles of frequency domain measurement (RBW, VBW settings). Lab 3: Analyzing Signal Harmonics and Spurious emissions. Lab 4: Measuring Occupied Bandwidth (OBW) and Carrier-to-Noise Ratio (C/N Ratio). Week 9: Instrumentation Lab (III) - Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) Understanding Microwave Network Parameters (S-Parameters). Lab 5: Performing Calibration and S-parameter measurement. Lab 6: Antenna impedance matching measurement and Bandpass Filter frequency response testing. Week 10: Midterm Technical Assessment (Hands-on Exam) Practical Exam: Utilizing the three instruments mentioned above to perform complete specification verification and data logging for a designated microwave module (e.g., a specific LNA or Filter). Week 11: Introduction to Software Defined Radio (SDR) Analysis of SDR Hardware Architectures (AD9361 / PlutoSDR / USRP). Development Environment Setup: GNU Radio Companion (GRC) and MATLAB/Simulink SDR Support Package. Week 12: SDR Signal Acquisition Implementation Lab 7: FM Broadcast Demodulation (The "Hello World" of SDR). Lab 8: Satellite Signal Practice — Receiving NOAA weather satellites or simulated laboratory Beacon signals and observing I/Q Constellation diagrams. Week 13: FPGA Fundamentals and Digital Logic DesignFPGA Internal Architecture (LUTs, Flip-Flops, DSP Slices, BRAM). Quick review of Verilog HDL syntax and Finite State Machine (FSM) design. Introduction to the Vivado development flow. Week 14: Digital Signal Processing (DSP) on FPGA Lab 9: Concepts of Parallel Processing and Pipeline Design. Lab 10: Implementing Digital Filters (FIR Filter) on FPGA. High-speed ADC/DAC interface control and Data Buffer (FIFO) design. Week 15: SDR and FPGA Integrated Implementation (I) Zynq Architecture (PS + PL) Data Flow Design. Lab 11: Implementing Digital Down Converter (DDC).
