Course Objective This course illustrates the basic principles of process optimisation, and introduces common optimisation strategies in chemical processes and energy systems. The contents include: optimisation theory and algorithms, mathematical programming and modelling techniques, and optimisation applications to chemical engineering problems and energy issues.

Course Schedule 1. Introduction of Optimization Applications in Chemical Processes 2. Variables, Objectives and Constraints in Optimization Problems 3. Optimization Fundamentals and Theory 4. Linear Programming Problems and Solution Approaches 5. Nonlinear Programming Problems and Solution Approaches 6. Mix Integer Linear/Nonlinear Programming Problems 7. Process Synthesis and Integration 8. Pinch Analysis Concepts and Applications 9. Resource Conservation Network Synthesis

Evaluation and grading policy Involvement: 30% Mid-term exam: 30% Final exam/report: 40%
