Course Objective	This is a one-semester graduate course on electromagnetic theory. The course slides are divided into four units: - Chapter 1: Maxwell Equations - Chapter 2: Propagation and Transmission - Chapter 3: Radiation - Chapter 4: Scattering Mathematical tools are introduced as needed throughout the course.

Evaluation and grading policy	This course includes four required presentations (each 25%). The first is a proposal outlining the final project topic, the second and third serve as progress updates, and the fourth is the final project presentation. Each presentation begins with a base score of 70 points. If a student does not have a project topic, they may instead present a recent (within five years) research paper. Additional points—up to 10 each—are awarded for (1) speech clarity, (2) slide quality, and (3) content completeness. These aspects are evaluated by the instructor. No tests are required in this course. However, if a student is unable to give a presentation (excluding the final presentation), they may substitute it with a written test. This option is allowed at most twice during the semester.

Foreign-language textbooks:No Course slides can be downloaded from: https://jake-w-liu.github.io/courses/course_emt/ No textbook is required for this course, but the following references are highly recommended: (1) Harrington’s classic textbook provides a concise yet rigorous treatment of electromagnetic theory. It is strongly recommended, though some of its conventions may differ from other texts. (2) Balanis’ comprehensive text serves as a detailed reference manual. While thorough, it can occasionally feel overwhelming, but remains an invaluable resource. (3) Barkeshli’s concise volume is a hidden gem; parts of the lecture content closely follow his clear and elegant derivations. (4) Ishimaru’s textbook, especially the second edition, offers broad coverage. However, it contains several typos—so keeping a copy of the first edition for comparison is advisable. (5) Pathak’s textbook, authored by my academic “grand-advisor” (my advisor’s advisor), presents more advanced topics and complements the foundational material covered in the earlier references.
