Course Objective This course provides a comprehensive study of convective heat transfer, focusing on the fundamentals of fluid flow, energy transport, and boundary layer theory. Both forced and natural convection are examined in detail, with emphasis on governing equations, similarity analysis, and engineering correlations. Applications to internal and external flows are highlighted to prepare students for solving real-world thermal problems.

Course Schedule Week 1 (9/11): Overview of heat transfer Week 2 (9/18): Introduction to convective heat transfer Week 3 (9/25): Governing equations I: conversation of mass and momentum Week 4 (10/2): Governing equations II: energy transport Week 5 (10/9): Boundary layer theory I: velocity boundary layer Week 6 (10/16): Boundary layer theory II: thermal boundary layer Week 7 (10/23): Similarity solutions for laminar boundary layers Week 8 (10/30): Heat transfer to fully-developed flow Week 9 (11/6): Midterm exam Week 10 (11/13): Heat transfer to developing flow Week 11 (11/20): Natural convection I: vertical surface Week 12 (11/27): Natural convection II: horizontal surface Week 13 (12/4): Transition to turbulence Week 14 (12/11): Turbulent boundary layer flow Week 15 (12/18): Heat transfer in turbulent boundary layer flow Week 16 (12/25): No lecture (Constitution Day) Week 17 (1/1): No lecture (New Year) Week 16 (1/8): Final exam
