Course Objective In the first semester, this course first introduces the core areas of physical chemistry by defining systems, states, and processes. Later, traditional thermodynamics is described and applied to understand the reaction spontaneous direction of macroscopic systems, including the explanation of the three laws of thermodynamics, to the description of thermodynamic behavior applied to gaseous and liquid systems.

Course Schedule 1. The properties of gases-Pressure (P), Volume (V) and Temperature (T) 2. The zeroth law of thermodynamics & Kelvin temperature scale 3. The first law of thermodynamics- 4. Heat, Work, and energy. 5. Internal energy, enthalpy 6. Heat capacity and internal pressure 7. Thermochemistry 8. The second law of thermodynamics-Heat energy & the concept of entropy 9. Mid-term exam 10. Equilibrium and spontaneity 11. The third law of thermodynamics 12. Entropy changes for specific processes 13. The Helmholtz and Gibbs free energies 14. Combining the First and Second Laws 15. Phase equilibrium 16. Physical transformations, mixing, and Colligative properties 17. Chemical equilibrium 18. Final exam The schedule is dependent on the actual progress of lesson.
