Course Objective This course aims to provide essential knowledge about the mechanical behavior and design of critical members of a building frame. The main focus will be on the beam, column, and beam-column joint for their flexure, shear, bond, and anchorage behaviors. Besides, state-of-the-art research about the deteriorated hysteresis behavior and damage evaluation of reinforced concrete columns will be presented.

Course Schedule Major Topics include: 1. Design concepts of reinforced concrete members 2. Reinforced concrete material properties and quality controls 3. Mechanical behavior of reinforced concrete 4. Confined concrete models and axial compression tests 5. Fundamentals of beam flexure 6. Moment curvature analysis and software demonstration 7. Concentrated plasticity approach for deflection calculations 8. Shear transfer mechanism and shear design 9. Bond and anchorage design 10. Cross-sectional analysis of columns and biaxial bending 11. Behavior and design of beam-column joints 12. Cyclic behavior and analytical methods for RC columns 13. Deteriorated hysteresis behavior of RC columns 14. Damage evaluation of RC columns

Evaluation and grading policy 1. Homework and Attendance 15% 2. Midterm Exam 35% 3. Term Project 50% ─ Choose a journal paper about the experimental study of RC members and give an oral presentation at the end of the course. ─ The paper should come from some famous journals (such as the ACI Structural Journal, Journal of Structural (or Bridge) Engineering (ASCE), Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics (EESD), Earthquake Spectra, Engineering Structures, Journal of Earthquake Engineering, Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering, Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, etc.), and be permitted by the instructor. ─ The journal papers published by ASCE, Engineering Structures, and Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering can be downloaded from NTUT library.
