Course Objective This course aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the various mechanical properties of engineering materials. Content covers the behavior of materials under different loading and environmental conditions, including elastic deformation, plastic deformation, hardness, impact toughness, fatigue, and creep. Students will learn the principles and methods for testing these properties and will gain hands-on experience through laboratory sessions. The course emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, enabling students to apply knowledge of material mechanical properties to engineering design and material selection. Specific teaching weeks will include laboratory sessions, online teaching, and open-book exams, requiring active student participation, data collection, and discussion. Important Course Notes International Student Friendly: This course is designed to be welcoming and supportive for international students. Language of Instruction and Assessment: For all students (domestic and international), all questions, presentations, and examinations must be completed in English. Laboratory Requirement: This course includes several laboratory sessions. Experimental results and reports will be discussed in class and will form an important basis for continuous assessment. Open-Book Exam Procedure: For open-book exams, students must come to the classroom to collect the exam paper, then may proceed to the library to research and answer the questions. Answers and findings will be discussed collectively at the end of the relevant class session. Online Teaching Weeks: Specific teaching weeks will be conducted online. Week 2 — Servo Stamping Fundamentals Mechanics/controls; motion profiles (dwell/pendulum/trapezoid); energy & tonnage; Project M1: Problem statement + KPI + data needs. Week 3 — Computer Coding Class #1 Motion-profile scripting; load–stroke data structures; plotting; In-Class Assignment #1: baseline motion set + visualization. Week 4 (Online) — Forming Basics w/ Servo Motion Yield criteria, FLD, tribology; Deliverable: literature review outline + baseline plan. Week 5 — Open-Book Exam #1 & In-Class Assignment #2 Open-book (short). Assignment #2: parameter sweep (5 profiles) with energy/peak-tonnage estimates; critique session. Week 6 — Data & Quick Simulation Sprint Signal processing; quick load–stroke sim; pre/post templates; M2 Checkpoint: methods draft + initial results (2–3 figures). Week 7 — In-Class Assignment #3 (Optimization Mini-Sprint) Tune profiles vs thinning/energy; prepare 5-slide interim deck; peer review. Week 8 (Online) — Submission Rehearsal Full report/code/slides peer review; freeze list; compliance check; M3: near-final package. Week 9 — SEYI Cup Submission & Demo (HARD DEADLINE) Submit final package; in-class dry demo if required by organizer. Midterm moved to Week 10 (was Week 9). Week 10 — Midterm Examination (moved) Reflection on competition outcomes; gap analysis. Week 11 — Process Modeling for Stamping (On-line teaching線上教學) Plane-stress plasticity; constitutive laws; contact/friction/heat; FE setup for servo motion. Week 12 — In-Class Assignment #4 Case analysis (cup drawing): compare motion profiles using provided results; draw-in/thinning/wrinkle risks; recommendation memo. Week 13 (Online) — Coding Workflows Batch runs; FLD checks; parameter studies; reporting templates. Week 14 — Open-Book Exam #2 & Optimization Loops Multi-objective trade-offs; simple optimizers.
