Course Objective This course introduces mathematical methods commonly used in engineering applications. Through problem solving and interpretation, students will learn to apply mathematical tools to address engineering challenges. The curriculum covers: (1) series solutions, (2) matrices and vectors, (3) vector calculus, (4) Fourier analysis, and (5) partial differential equations. The course aims to train students to establish an understanding of the connections and significance between theory and practice.

Course Schedule Week 1 Power series method (2/27 holiday) Week 2 Linear algebra: matrices, vectors, determinants Week 3 Inner product and vector product Week 4 Gradient, divergence, curl Week 5 Line integrals and surface integrals Week 6 1st midterm exam (4/3 holiday) Week 7 Fourier series Week 8 Arbitrary period, even and odd function Week 9 Half-range expansions, Strum-Liouville problems Week 10 Fourier Integral (5/1 holiday) Week 11 Fourier Transform Week 12 2nd Midterm exam Week 13 Basic concepts of PDEs Week 14 Solution by separating variables Week 15 P.D.E. of Laplace Week 16 P.D.E. of Laplace Week 17 P.D.E. of Laplace (6/19 holiday) Week 18 Final exam
