Course Objective Nanomaterials are materials with a single unit small sized between 1 and 100 nm. They have unique optical, electronic, thermo-physical or mechanical properties. Since some nanomaterials have properties of enzyme-like characteristics, they can act as artificial enzyme, which can be used for many applications such as biosensing, bioimaging, tumor diagnosis and so on. Students are expected to learn the different types of nanomaterials, unique properties of nanomaterials, the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials. This class is for upper level undergraduate students, with interested on material science and nanotechnology.

Course Schedule Week Title 1 Introduction on nano-materials 2. Different types of nano-materials - OD, 1D, 2D and 3D 3. Core-shell nano-particles and gold nano-shells 4. Carbon nano-world - fullerenes, graphenes and carbon nanotubes 5. Synthesis of nano-materials- General Introduction 6. Synthesis of nano-materials- Top-down Approach 7. Synthesis of nano-materials- Bottom-up Approach 8. Advanced synthesis of ALD 9. Midterm Exam 10. Quantum mechanics on electrons in chemical element 11. Quantum mechanics on chemical reactions 12. Quantum mechanics on photons 13. Materials analysis- SEM, TEM and Element studies 14. Materials analysis- XRD, crystal structure, and FTIR 15. Materials analysis- UV, Raman, XPS and energy level 16. ESG on nano-material synthesis (ITRI) 17. Applications- ultra-sensitive sensors and artificial catalysts for sustainable environments 18. Final exam
