Course Objective To understand how Life Cycle Thinking and Life Cycle Management can solve environmental problems. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), one of the most essential tools for analyzing and assessing environmental issues, will be taught during the semester. Students will also learn about the popular LCA software SimaPro. Various applications related to LCA, such as circular economy, net zero, carbon footprinting, carbon labeling, waste management, and eco-design, will also be practiced in the class.

Course Schedule 1. Concept of Systems, Life Cycle, and Life Cycle Management 2. Introduction of Life Cycle Assessment I: History, Development, and Applications 3. Introduction of Life Cycle Assessment II: Life Cycle Thinking and Life Cycle Management 4. Methodology of LCA: I. Goal and Scope Definition and Inventory Analysis 5. LCA Software SimaPro Tutorial: Introduction and Practices (Make learning groups) 6. Methodology of LCA-II. Inventory analysis 7. Methodology of LCA-III. Methodology of Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) 8. Methodology of LCA- IV. Uncertainty, Sensitivity Analysis, and Interpretation 9. Mid-term Exam 10. Group report- LCA for one product or service 11. LCA Applications(I): Product and Process Ecodesign; Environmental Declarations and Carbon Labeling, etc. 12. Special Topic: CBAM and Carbon Footprinting, Carbon Labeling, Environmental Footprinting, and Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA) 13. Other Types of LCA (Eco-efficiency, MFCA, Social LCA, and Organizational LCA, etc.), and LCA Applications(II): Environmental Engineering Related Applications 14. Quantitative Performance Assessment for Circular Economy 15. Company Tour Visit (Taiwan Cement) 16. LCA Outlook and Latest Development: Net Zero and Biodiversity; Natural Capital Accounting 17. Team Project Presentation 18. Final Exam
