Course Objective This course integrates foundational training in object-oriented programming with practical applications relevant to smart living technologies (Course No. 350096). Students will develop essential programming skills through exercises and projects, with a strong emphasis on OOP principles such as encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism. In addition to foundational OOP topics, the course explores real-world applications, including recent advancements in vision-language models and their integration into autonomous driving systems. Students will engage in critical reading and discussion of cutting-edge research papers to understand how OOP techniques support complex AI systems. Some parts of the course will be co-taught by a doctoral teaching assistant providing additional support and insights into advanced topics.

Course Schedule Week 1: Course Introduction, Logistics, and Student Background Survey -Overview of course objectives and requirements -Survey on programming experience and autonomous driving knowledge Week 2: Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) Concepts -Basics of OOP: abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism Week 3: Classes, Objects, and Encapsulation Fundamentals Weeks 4–6: Object-Oriented Design Patterns -Introduction and exercises Weeks 7–8: Inheritance, Polymorphism, and Advanced OOP Concepts -Paper reading & discussion session: Introduction to Vision-Language Models in AD Week 9: Paper discussion continued Week 10: Midterm Exam. Weeks 11–12: OOP programming & object-oriented data analysis applications Weeks 13–14: Paper Reading & Discussions on vision-language models in AD -Critical analysis of recent research papers -Guided discussions Weeks 15–16: OOP programming & industrial system development -Case studies and project work Weeks 17–18: Final project presentations

Evaluation and grading policy 1. Weekly Programming Assignments (25%) 2. Paper Reading & Discussion Reports (15%) 3. Midterm Examination (20%) 4. Final Project (30%) 5. Class Participation (10%) Students enrolling in this course should expect to spend 6–8 hours per week outside of class on reading, coding, and project development.
