Description This course provides the basics of light propagation in fibers; these include fundamental waveguiding concepts, the influence of various fiber structures, material properties of light transmission, and related devices and systems. The following topics will be introduced:(1) Review of electromagnetic wave propagation, (2) Slab waveguides, (3) Optical fibers with single-step index profiles, (4) Loss and dispersion in optical fiber, (5) Nonlinear effects in fiber (I), (6) Nonlinear effects in fiber (II), (7) Introduction to fiber sensors, (8) Introduction to fiber gratings.
