Description This course aims to enable students, through intensive reading and discussion of representative works of Victorian literature, to achieve a critical awareness of social, cultural as well as literary issues crucial to the nineteenth century. Key issues and concepts introduced include: urbanization, industrialization, utilitarianism, Marx's idea of revolution, bourgeois ideology, the condition of women, imperialism, colonialism, aestheticism,religion and science, and Victorian print culture.
