Description Due to the impact of Western culture, translation literature has played a very important role in the literary and cultural development of Taiwan. This course will explore the multifaceted relationships between translation literature and local culture, and how translation has affected the cultural landscape in Taiwan, including literary writing, periodicals, newspaper supplements and other published materials. In addition, the effect on dramatic performances, film adaptations etc. will also be discussed. The course will begin with a historical survey of translation literature and an assessment of the different strategies adopted in translating foreign literature. Then we will reflect on the following issues in a broader context of culture: Does translation literature promote or hamper culture changes? How literary works are chosen or rejected for publishing? How do translated best-sellers affect the local literary fields and markets?
