Description Engineering and Society (3 credits, 3 hours/week) The course provides a general overview of engineering, in particular civil engineerin. Topics include a historical outline of civil engineering, the built environment, societal and environmental impacts of major civil engineering projects such as bridges, building, dams, tunnel, water supply systems and transportation systems, regulation of engineering practice, sustainable development, equity and ethics, contemporary issues involving civil engineering and challenges for the 21st century. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: state the role of civil engineers in society; list significant achievements and key engineers that have contributed to the development of our built environment; explain how the profession is regulated and practiced; describe key issues related to sustainable development and the associated responsibilities of the engineer; and discuss the major contemporary issues involving civil
