Description This lab course makes students understand the effects of plastic deformation upon mechanical, physical and chemical properties of metals. The course includes: 1. mechanical properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals under different degree of plastic strain; 2. corrosion properties of 18-8 stainless steel; 3. tension tests of wires using different lubricants; 4. change of grain size with strain and annealing; 5. deformation by rolling; 6. forging; and 7. wire drawing. The main experiments will focus on: A. processes of plastic deformation including, rolling, swaging, wire drawing, plate pressing, plastic injection forming, and B. the observations of Luders’ bands, twinning, and slips in plastic deformation and fractures.
