Description
| Literacy refers to an individual’s basic ability to read and write. Cultural literacy, however, refers to an individual’s basic knowledge about a culture – about the history, the art, and the practices which an educated member of that culture would have knowledge of and which allow him to participate in conversations with others about the culture. Focusing on literature, one fundamental element of culture, asking what it means to be literate about Western literature, this course examines some of the basic texts, authors, and ideas in Western culture that are essential to the teaching and the study of literature.
