| This course familiarizes students with major second language acquisition theories and with those aspects of applied linguistics that are most relevant to second/foreign language learning and teaching. The topics that this course primarily deals with include the following: (1) first language acquisition; (2) second language acquisition; (3) comparing and contrasting first and second language acquisition; (4) learning styles and learner strategies; (5) affect in second language learning; (6) sociocultural factors in second language learning; (7) discourse analysis; (8) contrastive analysis, interlanguage, and error analysis; (9) communicative competence; (10) theories of second language acquisition; (11) language and culture; (12) language and the reading process; (13) language and the writing process; (14) the whole language philosophy.
