English Description
Justification: The rise of the novel in the eighteenth century introduced a new era in literary history. Different from the authors / literary works in the past, eighteenth-century writers tried to express their concerns of the society in more "realistic" ways. This course aims to examine the development of the genre with the focus on the works of eighteenth-century important novelists: Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, and Samuel Richardson. The emphasis of the course will be a direct investigation of literary texts along with theoretical interpretations. The hope is to help the students further their knowledge about realistic novel/narrative at its source. Methodology: Texts to be studied include novels, prose and pamphlet essays. In addition to the texts, students will be expected to learn more about cultural and contextual issues that influenced the emergence of the novel.
